Dan had gotten us a white Ford delivery van from Ron Saxon Ford...used to be on University Ave. in St. Paul, MN. This van was to transport us to northern Wisconsin and then deliver us and the Christmas trees we cut down back to St. Paul.
So, bright and early one Saturday morning we loaded ourselves into the van along with a couple of bottles of blackberry brandy and a couple bottles of quality Louisiana moonshine. Have any of you ever had good quality moonshine? Well let me tell you it is smooth stuff...
So, we sipped on blackberry brandy and moonshine during the two hour drive to Bruce, WI. We continued to sip on blackberry brandy and moonshine while walking through the tree farm and picking out out trees...including one extra tree for my mom.
By the time we reached my mother's house quite a party was rolling along. Mom, who was a teetotaler, did not quite approve of the shape we were all in...yet she enjoyed all of the attention as well as the beautiful balsam tree we brought to her. While we put it in the stand and decorated it (no drinking in Mom's house) she whipped up a huge batch of her Sloppy Joes, hot chocolate & coffee (to sober us up???), chips, rolls, and put out huge plates of home-made Christmas cookies and bars.
All to soon the festive afternoon turned into early evening and we loaded ourselves in the van once again to head for home. Gaylord crawled into the back of the van and passed out on top of our trees! It was a quiet drive back to St. Paul.
To this day I smile at the memory of this fun Christmas holiday memory.
