Back inside the warm, cozy haven of my wee cottage, second cup of coffee in hand, I reflected on the light these flowers brought into my morning. They did not chase away the chill, nor did they alter the season’s turn. But simply by blooming, they added joy, color, and brightness to the day. And in this way, they mirror what each of us can do—shine a little light in the lives of others. Not only when the world feels troubled and dark, but also in the gentler, ordinary days.
Dr. Wayne Dyer once wrote: “Have with you an imaginary candle flame that burns brightly regardless of what goes before you.” I carry those words with me, especially in these times. It is so easy to believe the flame might flicker out when winds of uncertainty blow. Yet what if, like these autumn blossoms, it kept glowing simply because that is its nature?
Others echo this same call to shine:
“The darkness occupying the night is not going to remove itself from the nighttime. So what benefits your existence, as a candle, if you are a light that moves itself out of the darkness? Is it not the destiny of the candle to be unafraid of the night?” ~C. JoyBell C.
“The moments of darkness are melancholic but the soft glow of a candle is compassionate.” ~Anoir Ou-Chad
Hope shines like a candle in the darkness. Keep the flame alive.” ~Debasish Mridha
The truth carried in each of these voices is the same: to bring light into the world is not to erase the darkness, but to soften it. To remind others—and ourselves—that there is warmth, color, and hope to be found, even in the coldest seasons.
And so I look again at the flowers in my garden. They bloom without asking if it is too late in the year, without worrying if their petals will withstand the frost. They simply shine. Perhaps our calling is the same.
With that thought, I step into the rest of this day, grateful for its unfolding. May it be filled with inspiration, with love that steadies the heart, and with hope that lights the path forward.
“Be a light—not only when the night is dark, but also when the day is bright. The world always needs your glow.”
~Wylddane
